Bank reconciliation - entered wrong closing balance - is there any hope?
Permalink Closed

There is now a big dent on my desk, and my forehead is kind of flat ...

I've been doing bank recs on Sage all day and each month is about 5 - 6 pages. I've just found that I started off my last one (Feb 11) by entering the closing balance for 10 Jan instead of for 28 Feb. Gaah! <thumk>

All the entries are right - they just don't boil down to zero.

Does anyone know of a way of recovering the situation without discarding the last 90 minute's work and starting over?

Always hopeful - but my mind is caving in right now.

Did you reconcile the unbalanced rec? If not you can simply change the closing balance figure.

If you reconciled you need to check if the difference is the same as the difference between the two closing balance figures. If it is when you do the next reconciliation using the correct closing balance it will right itself. (you can check because when you reconcile Sage keeps a PDF copy of the rec which you can access via the history button).

Aha!! biggrin

Sheila, you've made me a very happy guy. I just couldn't see where I could change the closing balance (I held back from reconciling once I realised what I'd done) but your comment led me to open it up again and - lo and behold - top right corner and top left corner ... which one to choose first?

Thank you - a lot of time saved. Much appreciated.
