I am new to the forum, though i have been looking at it every now and then for the last six months whilst doing my bookkeeping training. I just have a really simple question (I think!), I am planning to buy Quickbooks very soon, and I wanted to check if I would be able to email my clients their accounts as a Quickbooks file, once I had done them. If I did this, would they need quickbooks to be able to open the file at their end? Would I need to upload it onto their computer from the software that I buy?

Is it just to view the reports or is it so they can work on the files themselves? I would imagine there might be an option to export any report as a pdf file.

Never buy black socks from a normal shop. They shaft you every time.
You can e-mail reports to them in PDF format, when you actually go to e-mail the report or say an invoice it will automatically save it in PDF and add it as an attachment on the e-mail. I have never tried to send the whole company file and don't know if it could be done or not?
If you e-mail anything over in QB format the user at the other end will need the same QB as you to open it. So in effect your client would have to have the same package as you, which could be abit costly to the client if hes not particularly using it.
That's great about being able to send it as a PDF, that makes much more sense too.
I didn't know there was a free version no, I am planning to get Quickbooks Pro 2008 as it has been recommended to me by a firm I will be working with. Is the free one a fairly basic package?
The free download is a very cut down version of the premium.
It is quite useable, if your clients are not too big.It is multi company but you are limited to a combined total of twenty customer/ supplier accounts, also the reporting is limited and you cant customise the chart of accounts.
I have heard bad things about 2008, although they may not affect you too much (I believe users didn't like the lack of multi currency and other functions that were on earlier versions). They have compared it to the Microsoft cock up with Vista.
Like Microsoft, Intuit have recognised the problems and apparently the 2010 version has addressed these.
If your client is wanting to view all their accounts, when you back up the data you can save it as a portable file which can then be emailed. They would need to have quickbooks in order to read it - they would just need to restore this back up onto their version.
Your right the Pro 2008 version dosen't have mulit-currency which for me isn't a problem as I don't need it, but for those that do its a problem. I did have some stuff through the post the other day about upgrading to 2010 and it said on there that the multi currency is now back on the 2010.
Accountingweb did a review this week and for some reason I can't find it on the website (I know Shaun's an avid reader, perhaps he knows where it's located) but it's seem that the 2010 version is being well received.
The group is run by John Stokdyk who is one of the guru's (and Editor) over on Accounting Web.

You mentioned you are going to buy quickbooks after a recommendation by a firm. You might want to enquire if they have purchased or upgraded to 2010, when we did there were half a dozen discount cards included within the 2010 package, each allowing for a 20% discount for the holder of the card on any quickbooks product I think.
These seem to be given to agents or others to elp promote quickbooks. Unfortunatly I have sent mine out already but whoever made the recommendation to you might be getting 2010 and might get some of these cards. Better you getting discount that them going to waste.
