Should I use a .ltd.uk Domain Name?

Hi Jill,

Welcome to the forum.

I would say that you should avoid .ltd.uk domain names for your site. Your customers are unlikely to have heard of this domain name extension and people who remember the name of your site will just type in your site name -  e.g. 123booksplus - followed by '.com' or '.co.uk' instead.

So, I'd recommend a .co.uk or .com domain name, only.

It sounds like the domain name with your name in it is pointing to a 'parked' landing page. This means someone has bought it. One way to find out who owns the domain is to search for the owners details at www.Who.is

There is a search box on that site where you enter the domain name e.g. 123booksplus.co.uk and you can normally find the domain name owners name and address/ email address.  You could then make the owner an offer on the name.

However, the problem is the owner might not want to sell or their price might be too expensive.

So, it may be more appropriate to register a new domain name and slightly rebrand your business. Given the growing importance of the internet, owning a domain name that matches your business really is a priority.

Also, you might find this thread about naming your practice of  interest...........

Hi everyone

Just stumbled across this forum whilst searching for book-keeping articles.

I'm setting up as a book-keeper and trying to build my own website. I've searched for an available .co.uk domain name but my business name is already taken in .co.uk. As far as I can see it's not being used but there's no contact details for the owner, just lots of adverts.

An alternative that's been recommended is a .ltd.uk domain name. I've set up a limited company so I'm told I can use this type of domain. I've never come across a website using a .ltd.uk before. Should I register this? It's nice and short e.g. 123books.ltd.uk (not my real namewink). I'd rather keep it short than go for something longer like 123booksbrightonuk.co.uk etc.

Thanks.

Jill

Hi Jill

Welcome to the forum!

One of my clients has a .ltd.uk email address. They've never mentioned that they've had any issues with it.
